Grade Control Specialist - (Support)


The Grade Control Specialist (Support) is responsible for the installation of aftermarket grade control, grade guidance and other devices use in machine solutions offered in the precision grading realm. In addition, the person in this role will be responsible for calibration and troubleshooting of SmartGrade solutions.


Support the direction of Precision Grading / Machine Control for the Doggett Group. Work hand-in hand with the sales department to present the value to the customer regarding Integrated Machine Controls along with the increase production and reduced manpower. Must be the go-to person for answers and support for all machine control/guidance systems. Troubleshooting, installation, calibration, and customer training are essential to this position.


  • Install and calibrate solutions for customers
  • Ensure installations are done in a clean and professional manner
  • Ensure all components of the solutions are properly communicating
  • Visit stores to conduct SmartGrade calibrations as needed
  • Troubleshoot issues with SmartGrade machines and report back issue to service departments if repair required goes beyond the technology package on the machine
  • Work in conjunction with the service technicians as needed to support machine control vs. machine operations 
  • Perform Field Kit installation and system upgrades as needed
  • Ensure designated techs at each branch are trained on calibration of SmartGrade solutions
  • Cooperate with JDLink Administrator in order to get new MTGs installed on customer machines
  • Work with service departments to coordinate installation of MTGs on Doggett owned rental fleet
  • Maintain visibility using CRM of customers with support contracts
  • Conduct end of support contract system maintenance, record results, and make recommendations for repairs needed 
  • Report back on status of final system maintenance visits to ensure transparency
  • Discuss renewals with customer and turn over leads 
  • Engage customers with Expert Alerts that branches are not able to respond to
  • Take corrective action in accordance with existing policies and procedures
  • In situations where repair is beyond the scope, collaborate with responsible branch for follow up
  • Engage with Machine Monitoring Center (MMC) team for follow up actions and documentation

Personal Development

  • Take every JDU class available for Smart Grade and machine control guidance
  • Investigate other training outside of the Deere system
  • Learn the systems related to GPS and machine control (Topcon, Trimble, Spectra and Leica)
  • Work with customers who utilize grade control to better understand the customers’ business
  • Research and stay abreast of the latest technology changes and developments


Knowledge, Skill and Ability - 

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working as a heavy equipment mechanic, or similar experience as a mechanic in another industrial setting
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a company provided vehicle 
  • Own a basic mechanic’s toolset
  • Welding experience 
  • Able to use common Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel and Edge
  • Understanding of heavy equipment CANbus, J1939, and RS232  communications
  • Understanding of construction applications and machine operation
  • Experience with Topcon, Leica, or Trimble grade control systems 

Working Environment/Physical

  • Capable of moving objects weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Able to work on and around heavy equipment
  • Walk over rough terrain typically found on construction sites
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle day or night
  • Daily travel required however, minimal overnight stays are required
  • Manufacturer required training may require air travel and overnight stays
  • Hazards from electrical, mechanical and power equipment
  • Risk of exposure to chemicals such as steam cleaner soap, used oil, spent antifreeze, parts cleaning solvent, volatile hydrocarbons, battery acid
  • Mists, fumes and non-continuous noises of varying sound levels and intensities
  • Heavy dust from job site conditions
  • Basic math skills
